Live events can be a surprisingly powerful lever for indie authors—not just for selling books, but for building a sustainable career.
I've come to discover that local community events have sprouted across plenty of cities here in Southern California, especially in cities like Santa Ana, Fullerton, Long Beach, Whittier, Tustin, Ontario, Riverside, and more, with many of these cities hosting monthly art walks that include all kinds of vendors. The community events are the perfect venue to introduce your work, your talent, and build brand awareness. It's easy to fill your calendar and stay busy with live events.
There is a cost to vend, along with time commitments often ranging from 4 to 8 hours per event, pre-vending preparation, and stepping away from any shyness in communicating with the public about your work, your inspiration, and your future endeavors. But, if you're asking yourself, "Is it worth it?" YES is the answer. Especially for indie authors, like myself, and any creative artist, no matter your medium. Let me convince you with a handful of success tidbits I've personally experienced and recommend:
Marketing dollars don't come easy, so take the opportunity to vend at community events and meet your potential readers face-to-face. It's a lasting impression you'll make and one that can help drive referrals.
Bring flyers to encourage potential outreach for your work. Plus, it's a nice introductory & promotional piece (post-card size works well, too) that can be shared with their friends and family. Be sure to include your bio, a very brief description of your work, and your contact info/website. These flyers/postcards work well to keep you in front of your potential audience.
Live events allow you to introduce your work and your personality. People often make purchases from those they like and trust. Show off not only your talent but who you are as a creator and the emotional resonance your medium drives---what you want your audience to feel.
Making new friends is always a gift, and I have the most wonderful time meeting people as they stroll and stop by my booth. For me, it's not about driving sales as much as it is about welcoming and listening and learning from others about who they are, what propels them in life, and what makes them smile the most. Making connections and understanding human interests always help me as I further develop my writing skills. It's truly an honor to hear about experiences, challenges, and successes that come from conversations started with a warm hello.
Genuine conversations build trust and with that comes friendship. For me, these are the readers who appreciate my work and tend to sign up for my newsletter. They ask about my next projects, about my next events, and about speaking at their book club meetings. Friendship is often an endless reward.
At the end of these events, my heart feels full and I'm absolutely delighted to have met more wonderful, genuine people. Their kindness shines bright in this world we share together; it's what makes me feel the happiest.
If you haven't yet signed up for my monthly newsletter, you can do so from the form at the bottom of my website's home page located here. Thanks, Friends!
